SCREENING of The Bread of those early years (DAS BROT DER FRÜHEN JAHRE), presented by our great host John Wohlmacher.

– – –

The 24 year old electrician Walter (Christian Doermer) is instructed by his father to pick up the young daughter of a family friend from the Gleisdreieck train station. In a matter of seconds he falls in love, decides to quit his job and leaves his fiancee. Walter rejects the bourgeois life that others have had in mind for him – but will his new found love be a valid alternative?

Told mostly through flashbacks and parallel perspectives, Herbert Vesely’s feature film debut was meant to be the first film of the artistic movement surrounding the ‘Oberhausener Manifesto’ – the german attempt at creating a ‘Nouvelle Vague’. But “The Bread of those early years” flopped in Cannes and with german critics. Even though it went on to win various awards in germany, it’s been mostly ‘ignored’ since in its home country, still waiting for a home video release.

Arguably the most artistically successful film of the ‘Oberhauseners’ “The Bread of those early years” is not only a unique film in the context of the german film canon, but also a loving portrait of Berlin and its young inhabitants during the early 60s.

All night long from 6pm till dawn with special celebration brunch in the morning.

Exhibition : opening on the 13th till the 30th of september.

Artist Edouard Burgeat’s new exhibit at Neu West extends broadly in a contextual sense from personal to global. The former manifests as a hidden journey and the global as a double-sided mixed media piece playfully lit. Through these multiple media, material, processes, and techniques, the viewer is confronted with the past dynamically, and invited to question history beyond the lens of national identity.

Bruce Andrews (NYC), Sally Silvers, and Das Ausland (HH/B) are teaming up to explore & explode but also establish & extend connections in a collaborative live-editing-cum-free-improv performance.

Entrance 10 Euro

BRUCE ANDREWS is a radical poet, art theorist, and political scientist based in New York City since the 1970s, who has maintained a consistent position and prolific record of activism at the radical edge of the contemporary avant-garde. As the
Oxford Companion to 20th Century Literature puts it, Andrews is “a performance artist and poet whose texts are some of the most radical of the Language school; his poetry tries to cast doubt on each and every ‘natural’ construction of language.” The deconstructive impulse of his work that critiques “the establishment’s strategic project of already appropriating sense & already making use of it” is coupled with a constructivist contextualization of the subject. A praxis that aims at “repossessing spaces & relations & articulation.” Andrews is the author of more than thirty collections of poetry and performance scores, as well as numerous critical essays.

SALLY SILVERS is a Guggenheim Foundation and “Bessie” award-winning choreographer who has been making work since the 1980’s. As the Artistic Director of Sally Silvers & Dancers she has toured nationally and internationally in USA, Mexico, Europe, and the far East. She has been called “downtown queen of intelligent quirk” (New Yorker) & her last work, Bonobo Milkshake, was chosen by The New York Times as one of the top 3 pieces to see in New York for 2012. She choreographed 3 musicals for the Sundance Theater Festival and co-directed 2 award-winning dance films: Little Lieutenant and Mechanics of the Brain.

DAS AUSLAND is a free improvisation four piece based in Hamburg and Berlin. Breaking away from genre-based idiomatic musical expressions such as post-punk, hardcore, noise rock, and no wave, Das Ausland seeks to channel the energy of such forms and practices into freer and more informal musical expression and collective improvisation, flirting with constructivist noise and the radical legacy of the New Black Music. Struggle is mandatory. To sync or swarm, that is the question. Das Ausland is Dennis Büscher-Ulbrich (Drums and Percussion), Philipp Günzel (Moog, Guitar), Max Römer (Saxophone, Bass), and Tim Schirmag (Guitar, Electronics).Screen Shot 2016-09-20 at 11.47.19 AM

Harmonic Ratios: Music and Crystals
October 6, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Article Lead - wide6712922213zng0image_related_articleLeadwide_729x410_13yt8m_png1426207333540_jpg-620x349

On the evening of October 6th Neu West Berlin will host the opening of Harmonic Ratios with an exhibition and interactive talk followed by a 10 day exhibition. (October 6th-16th)

From video mapping to electronic music to geometric etchings and multi-coloured installations, the Harmonic Ratios exhibition will allow people to engage in a near-full sensory experience of the internal structures of music and crystals. 6 artists will approach as many elements of the vast and magical world of the system of harmony including video mapper Kalma who will be showing quivering black and white crystal-cubes that move in response to the changing frequencies, electronic musician and painter Sean Revell whose specially commissioned multi-metric musical piece will weave in an out of the twirling rainbow installation by boundary pushing artist Daniel Stempfer, and Tegan Emerson whose delicate drawings of crystalline geometric structures will be a treat for the eye and mind.

All of this will be paired with a talk that will take place on the opening night of the show (October 6th) between curator of Harmonic Ratios and musician, Juliette Wallace, musicologist, Hilary Baker, cultural expert, Stefan Höppe, and crystallographer Manfred Weiss. The question of how the internal mathematics in both music and crystals creates such external beauty will be addressed, from Pythagoras to Bjork.
